Top Takeaways Of The Week

WISDOM

Bonhoeffer’s Theory of Stupidity: â€śEvil can be guarded against. Stupidity cannot. And the world’s few evil people have little power without the help of the world’s many stupid people. As a result, stupidity is a far greater threat than evil.” â€“ Gurwinder Bhogal Tweet

Mean World Syndrome: â€śThe news exists to get your attention, so it tends to shock. As such, it doesn’t reflect reality but precisely that which is uncharacteristic of reality. But since it’s all we see, we begin to think the world is crazier than it actually is.” â€“ Gurwinder Bhogal Tweet

Introspective Illusion: â€śWe think we understand the real reasons why we think & act the way we do, but we think other people have little understanding of why they think & act the way they do. We assess others as if they’re psychiatric patients and ourselves as if we’re gods.” – Gurwinder Bhogal Tweet

Sayre’s Law“The lower the stakes, the more vicious the politics. In tense nuclear talks, people act civilized. In Twitter culture wars, people act like Armageddon has come, raging like maniacs, calling for total war, safe in the knowledge none of it matters.” â€“ Gurwinder Bhogal Tweet

HEALTH:

Steak is a Steer: Most beef comes from steers, not cows. A cow is usually raised for milk and is harvested for meat after 8 years, which is of lower quality than 2-year-old steer meat. Additionally, cows over 30 months of age can potentially have mad cow disease. - Pat LaFrieda

Is that Steak Still OK?
The best way to tell if meat is rotten is to smell it. Just the color turning grey doesn’t necessarily mean rotten meat. - Pat LaFrieda

The Best Deal in Steaks:
The flat iron is the most underrated cut of meat. They taste the same as a New York strip at 25% the cost. The flat iron steak comes from the front blade of the front shoulder
The most overrated cut is “anything referred to as sirloin”. Butchers call anything sirloin to hype it up. - Pat LaFrieda

Don’t Be a Mouthbreather: â€śIf you wake up with a dry mouth, you’re not waking up feeling refreshed”. Mouth breathing increases your risk of raspatory infections, snoring, sleep apnea, and more. â€“ Patrick McKeown

BOLT Test: Take a breath in and out through your nose, then pinch your nose and time how long it takes to feel a definite desire to breathe or feel the first involuntary movement of your breathing muscles. If you’re above 25 seconds, there’s an 89% chance that dysfunctional breathing is not present. Many people with anxiety and panic disorder struggle to get 10 seconds. Their breathing is always in fight or flight, which only feeds their condition. â€“ Patrick McKeown

You Needed Wisdom Teeth Taken Out Because of How you Breath (and eat):
Many issues with our breath are not psychological, they are anatomical—and they’ve developed over the last few hundred years. Evolution means change, not necessarily progress. Example: Our mouths have grown smaller over time which has inherently led to crooked teeth—this never used to be a natural human trait  â€“ Patrick McKeown

WEALTH:

How to Win at Twitter:
“I kind of look at Twitter as performance art, I find people who are very literal have a very hard time. The magic happens when you’re smart, funny, and entertaining.” â€“ Jim O’Shaughnessy

The Source of Memes:
“People don’t have ideas. Ideas have people.” â€“ Trung Phan quoting Carl Jung
